The Luxeed R7 initially entered the Chinese market in September 2024. It became the brand’s bestseller with 73,239 units delivered so far, according to China EV DataTracker. Chery is responsible for the development and production of the Luxeed R7, while Huawei takes care of this model’s sales via its HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance) network. On August 25, HIMA launched the updated Luxeed R7 crossover.
Luxeed R7 exterior
The 2026 model year Luxeed R7 fastback crossover has a redesigned front end with a more aggressive bumper and a redesigned emblem with “Luxeed” inscription. The R7’s front bumper has an active air intake. Dimensions of the Luxeed R7 are 4982/1981/1650 mm with a wheelbase of 2,950 mm. This Chinese car is 47 mm longer than the BMW X6.
Thanks to a sleek roofline and a slanted bonnet, the Luxeed R7 boasts a drag coefficient of 0.219 Cd. It is slightly lower than the Tesla Model Y’s number. A lower drag coefficient translates into quieter rides with less energy consumption on highways. From the back, the Luxeed R7 adopts a single taillight unit and a ducktail spoiler. The 2026 model is available for purchase in nine body color variants, including the new Aurora Green shade.
Luxeed R7 interior
The interior of the 2026 model year Luxeed R7 got a 16.1-inch floating screen in the center console. It became 12.9% larger, compared to the previous model. The new monitor boasts a resolution of 3K. It is powered by the HuaweiOS operating system. Another highlight of the R7 is an oval-shaped three-spoke steering wheel with a gear shifter mounted behind. The car’s instrument panel has a diameter of 12.3 inches. The updated R7 also has a new purple interior shade.

The BEV entry-level variant of the Luxeed R7 comes standard with a 215 kW (288 hp) electric motor in the rear axle. It is powered by an 82 kWh ternary NMC pack for 667 km of CLTC range. The second trim level offers a larger 100 kWh battery for 802 km of range. The top-trim Luxeed R7 BEV has two e-motors for 365 kW (489 hp). It can run up to 736 km on a single charge
The EREV and the BEV trim levels of the Luxeed R7 are priced equally. It is a rare practice among Chinese automakers, as smaller battery usage allows for reducing the car’s cost. The Luxeed R7 fastback crossover, a collaboration between Chery and Huawei, is a formidable new entrant in the highly competitive electric vehicle market. Its aggressive pricing, advanced technology, and compelling specifications position it as a direct challenger to a range of established models, from popular mass-market EVs to premium performance crossovers.
Here’s a comparison of the Luxeed R7 to some of its key competitors:
1. vs. Tesla Model Y (Juniper)
The Tesla Model Y is arguably the Luxeed R7’s most significant rival, especially in the global market. While the Model Y has dominated EV sales, the R7 aims to undercut it with a superior feature set and potentially a more luxurious feel for a similar price point.
Dimensions & Space: The Luxeed R7 is a larger vehicle, with a wheelbase of 2,950 mm compared to the Model Y’s 2,890 mm. It’s also 47 mm longer than a BMW X6, placing it in a higher size class than the Model Y. While the Model Y is known for its practicality and massive 971-liter trunk, the Luxeed R7’s 837-liter trunk is also substantial, and it adds an additional 52-liter frunk on the BEV version. The R7’s longer body and larger wheelbase are likely to translate to more comfortable rear passenger space.
Aerodynamics: The R7 boasts an impressive drag coefficient of 0.219 Cd, which is slightly lower than the Tesla Model Y. This is a key selling point for the R7, as it promises quieter rides and better energy efficiency at highway speeds.
Technology & Features: This is where the Luxeed R7 makes a strong case. Huawei’s influence is evident in the vehicle’s “Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance” (HIMA) and the “HuaweiOS” operating system that powers its 16.1-inch 3K floating screen. The R7 also offers a suite of luxury and convenience features not found on a standard Model Y, such as 21 Huawei Sound speakers, a built-in refrigerator, massage functions on the front seats, and a microphone-free karaoke function. The R7’s zero-gravity front seats and stepless electric adjustment for the rear seats are premium touches that the Model Y lacks.
Powertrain & Range: The R7 offers both EREV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle) and BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) options, giving it a versatility that the all-electric Model Y can’t match. The R7’s top-tier BEV variant offers a CLTC range of 802 km (with a 100 kWh battery), which is competitive with the Model Y’s ranges, though it’s important to note that CLTC ratings are often more optimistic than EPA or WLTC ratings.
2. vs. Nio EC7
The Nio EC7 is a direct competitor in the premium electric fastback SUV segment, targeting similar customers who value style and technology.
Design & Aerodynamics: The Nio EC7 has a sleek, coupe-like silhouette and once held the title for the most aerodynamic SUV with a drag coefficient of 0.23 Cd. While the Luxeed R7’s 0.219 Cd is slightly better, both cars prioritize style and efficiency.
Performance: The EC7’s dual-motor AWD system delivers 480 kW (653 hp), allowing it to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. The Luxeed R7’s top-tier BEV variant has a combined peak power of 365 kW (489 hp), making the EC7 the more performance-oriented vehicle.
Technology: Both vehicles are technology-focused. The Nio EC7 features Nomi AI, an advanced digital assistant, and a smart fragrance system. The Luxeed R7 counters with its HuaweiOS-powered cockpit, a high-fidelity sound system, and a range of luxury features that make it a compelling tech-centric alternative.
3. vs. Zeekr 001
The Zeekr 001, also a fastback, is known for its blend of performance, style, and luxury, making it a key competitor to the R7.
Design and Dimensions: The Zeekr 001 is often described as a “luxury shooting brake” and is known for its stylish looks and solid build quality. The Luxeed R7 is a larger vehicle, offering more space and a slightly different aesthetic.
Performance: The Zeekr 001’s Performance AWD model can deliver 537 hp and go from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. This is slightly more powerful than the top-end R7 BEV, which has a peak power of 489 hp.
Interior & Features: Both cars have high-end interiors, but the Luxeed R7’s list of luxury features like zero-gravity seats, a built-in fridge, and a high-end sound system give it a strong value proposition, potentially at a lower price point than the Zeekr 001.
4. vs. Porsche Macan EV
While a Porsche Macan EV is a premium luxury vehicle with a significantly higher price tag, the Luxeed R7’s aggressive pricing and feature list could draw comparisons, particularly for customers in emerging markets looking for a high-value alternative.
Performance: The Macan EV’s Turbo trim can produce up to 630 hp with its dual-motor system, significantly more powerful than the R7’s 489 hp. The Macan is a performance-focused SUV, while the R7 prioritizes technology and comfort.
Brand and Price: This is the most significant difference. The Porsche Macan EV is a heritage luxury brand with a price point that starts in a completely different category. The Luxeed R7, with a starting price of around $34,850 USD, aims to offer a similar experience for a fraction of the cost, leveraging its features and technology to appeal to a value-conscious luxury buyer.
In summary, the Luxeed R7 is not just another Chinese electric car. It’s a statement piece that uses a blend of sophisticated design, Huawei-backed technology, and a rare dual-powertrain strategy to offer a highly competitive package. By providing a host of luxury features at an exceptionally low price, it is poised to disrupt the market and force both established and emerging rivals to reconsider their own value propositions.
